Scroll Pump

Scroll Pump Technology: How It Works, Key Components, and Industrial Applications

A scroll pump is an oil-free, positive displacement vacuum pump that generates vacuum or low-pressure compressed air using two interleaved spiral elements. Known for clean operation, low noise, and high reliability, scroll pump technology is widely used in laboratory, semiconductor, pharmaceutical, and light industrial environments where contamination-free performance is critical.

  • Scroll pumps operate using two involute spirals:
  • One fixed scroll
  • One orbiting scroll

The orbiting scroll moves in a circular path without rotating on its own axis. This motion creates sealed gas pockets between the scroll flanks.

  • Gas Intake – Gas enters at the outer perimeter.
  • Gas Trapping – Crescent-shaped pockets form between the scrolls.
  • Inward Movement – The orbital motion drives trapped gas toward the center.
  • Volume Reduction – Pocket volume decreases progressively.
  • Discharge – Compressed gas exits through a central discharge port.

Because suction, compression, and discharge occur simultaneously at different radial positions, scroll pumps produce smooth, low-pulsation flow.

Scroll pumps operate on the positive displacement principle:

  • A fixed gas volume is trapped.
  • The volume is reduced.
  • Pressure increases as volume decreases.

Vacuum is produced by continuously removing gas molecules from a sealed system, lowering absolute pressure below atmospheric level.

Compression follows a polytropic process (PVⁿ = constant), where decreasing volume increases pressure and temperature. Proper thermal management ensures dimensional stability and efficiency.

In scroll compressors (air compression variant), the same geometry increases discharge pressure instead of exhausting to atmosphere

  1. Fixed Scroll
Precision-machined stationary spiral containing the discharge port.
  2. Orbiting Scroll
Moves in orbital motion to form compression chambers.
  3. Eccentric Drive Shaft
Converts motor rotation into orbital movement, determining displacement volume.
  4. Oldham Coupling
Prevents the orbiting scroll from rotating while allowing orbital motion.
  5. Tip Seals
Polymer-based seals that minimize internal leakage and maintain vacuum efficiency.
  6. Bearings and Thrust Assembly
Support radial and axial loads generated during compression.
  7. Electric Motor
Direct-drive motor, often VSD-compatible for energy efficiency.
  8. Cooling System
Air- or water-cooled design to remove compression heat and maintain performance.
  9. Exhaust Valve
    Prevents backflow during shutdown.

Typical performance specifications for a dry scroll vacuum pump include:

  • Ultimate vacuum: 0.01 – 0.1 mbar (1–10 Pa)
  • Pumping speed: 5 – 40 m³/h (laboratory scale)
  • Continuous duty operation
  • Low vibration and noise levels

Scroll compressor variants can deliver oil-free compressed air up to 8–10 bar.

Scroll pumps are commonly used as backing pumps for turbomolecular systems or as standalone rough vacuum pumps.

Scroll vacuum pumps are widely used in:

  • Semiconductor manufacturing – load locks, wafer handling
  • Laboratories and research facilities – rotary evaporators, freeze dryers, vacuum ovens
  • Pharmaceutical production – clean process vacuum
  • Medical systems – dental air, oxygen concentrators (compressor type)
  • Analytical instrumentation – mass spectrometers
  • Packaging and automation systems – vacuum gripping and clamping
  • Oil-free vacuum generation
  • Low maintenance requirements
  • Compact and energy-efficient design
  • Smooth, low-pulsation operation
  • Clean and environmentally friendly performance

Scroll pump technology delivers reliable, oil-free vacuum and low-pressure compressed air through precision orbital compression. By progressively reducing gas volume between interleaved spirals, scroll vacuum pumps achieve stable rough vacuum levels with minimal vibration and contamination risk.

For industries requiring clean vacuum systems, consistent performance, and reduced maintenance, scroll pumps remain a highly efficient and technically proven solution.
